Review – Gordon and MacPhail Imperial 12 Years Old 1997 61.6% Cask Strength

Drink Imperial whisky in Malaysia

Looking to drink Imperial whisky in Singapore? This sample of Gordon and MacPhail Imperial 12 Years Old 1997 61.6% Cask Strength was drunk during the inaugural Whisky Lah! whisky festival held at The Gasket Alley located at Lot 15, Jalan 13/6, Section 13, 46200, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia on 7 September 2024.

What does Imperial whisky taste like? This Gordon and MacPhail Imperial 12 Years Old 1997 61.6% Cask Strength bottling tastes like:

Nose: mellow and wet bread malty, sour rockmelon

Palate: iron and copper surface, freshly toasted baguette bread, fruity raisins and spicy rich mentoes grape

What do we think of this bottle of Imperial whisky?

A “chopped up” flavour profile that hits across multiple different profiles – a dominant malty bready taste which is spliced with fruity notes, generally grapey but at the same time having a very sweet mineralic touch. This Imperial is the most out of the way one we’ve done before, especially compared to other expressions which, while still fruity, do not come across as this malty. This may be attributed to the age of the whisky, or to the butt used. This Imperial was a part of a lost distillery tasting set.

Where can you get Imperial whisky by the glass in Singapore?

You can buy Imperial whisky by the dram from The Swan Song, such as the Gordon and MacPhail Imperial Reserve 1995, done by the same independent bottler. You can also find extremely rare vintage bottlings like the R. W. Duthie & Co. Imperial 1963 Narsai’s Restaurant & Corti Brothers – Pellegrini Import or extremely limited editions like the Imperial 1990 30 Year Old by Elixir Distillers.
