What is the Port Ellen Distillery?
Port Ellen – A Lost Distillery, newly reopened on the 19th of March 2024. Port Ellen Distillery is located on the Isle of Islay, owned by Diageo, and up until recently has been focusing on producing maltings for the other distilleries on Islay.
How did I learn about the Port Ellen Distillery?

I had heard the name of Port Ellen long before I got into whisky. From the manga series Baki – Son of Ogre, Port Ellen was a whisky drunk by Hanma Yujiro in an INTERESTING fashion – a beer mug. This Port Ellen does a homage to Gordon and Macphail’s bottling series, Connoisseurs Choice. Of course, some minor details can’t be ignored. such as calling an Islay whisky a Highland Malt and 70 proof being mistaken as 70% abv. Of course, minor manga details aside, ever since this chapter, Port Ellen has been an intrusive thought was a premium whisky that I would likely never get a chance to drink.
How to find Port Ellen whisky
A little bit of history on Port Ellen; the distillery was closed in 1983 – the manga panel has an acceptable mistake in that the bottle was distilled in 1989, which should not have been possible.
Independent bottlers have since been distributing Port Ellen Single Malt Scotch whiskies. Aside from that, old and rare Port Ellen bottlings can be found through private collectors or whisky auctions.
